THERE is a state champion in our midst.
Upper Hunter golfer Phil Ledgerwood has returned from Walcha with the NSW Veterans Sand Greens Championship title.
Ledgerwood shot rounds of 76 and 73 to post a final score of 149 at the 36-hole championship.
Runner-up was hometown hero Simon Cross, who came away with 72 and 80 for a total of 152.
“There was 128 starters [at the tournament] and 60 of those were Veterans,” Ledgerwood said.
“I’ve played in it before, it’s on every four years and is normally held in Walcha because it’s the closest.
“Seven of us went from Murrurundi and I was lucky enough to win it for the first time.
“The sand greens were a lot slower than ours which took a bit of getting used to, but it is a beautiful golf course there.”
Following his success, Ledgerwood will now compete in the Murrurundi Summer Cup alongside about 50 other golfers on November 12-13.
