With the continuing drought conditions prevailing in the Upper Hunter and across the state, surface water supplies continuing to diminish even further and the storage of water within large dams such as the Glenbawn Dam shows its importance to the sustainable economic prosperity and development of our Shire.

This fact has become even more relevant in our Shire with the level 6 water restrictions being now in place for the residents of Murrurundi. Council has discussed plans to supply water to the residents of Murrurundi if the level of available water in the Murrurundi Dam decreases further. The proposed water pipeline to Murrurundi from Scone, which draws water from Glenbawn Dam, is more critical than ever to be completed in 2020.
May the heavens open and replenish our water supplies.
Plenty of fun is still to come
With the Aberdeen Highland Games being as successful as ever, we have concluded the four major festivals in our Shire, with the Murrurundi King of the Ranges in February, Scone Horse Festival in May, and Merriwa Festival of the Fleeces the long weekend in June.
There are still plenty of great events to attend.
The Merriwa Springtime Show is on 14 to 16 September at the picturesque Merriwa Showgrounds with something for everyone from traditional show events like with working dogs, sheep, cattle, horses and competitive poultry, crafts and cooking. Then there is the fireworks on the Saturday night.
View the weekend program of events at www.merriwashow.com.au or at any of the Shire’s Visitor Information Centres.
Epuron Wind Farm
There is likely to be a Liverpool Range Wind Farm built between Coolah and Cassilis, bringing a number of benefits to those in the area.
With the planning approval now given by the NSW Minister for this project to begin, Upper Hunter Shire Council (UHSC) and Warrumbungle Shire Council (WSC) have created the draft Voluntary Planning Agreement (VPA) that, amongst other issues, outlines the obligations of the Epuron company in regard to the wind farm including community funding and road funding.
There will be a new Community Consultative Committee for the project. It will be a s355 committee where both UHSC and WSC each will have one Councillor, with four community members on the committee. Council staff will attend for recording and reference purposes.
The VPA document will be on public display for 28 days. I encourage you to view the document.
