Homelessness is often a result of a number of complex issues which can include shortage of affordable and available rental housing, domestic and family violence, financial crisis, long term unemployment, economic and social exclusion, severe and persistent mental illness and psychological distress. Whatever the reason there are individuals and families who face that crisis here in the Upper Hunter Shire.
Council is currently working with the Upper Hunter Homeless Service and the Scone Neighbourhood Centre to find a safe place that will enable an interim measure for some of those people looking for a house. A house for short term relief gives time to manage the issues and bring in support services where necessary.
Who to Contact
No rain and the drought continues to worsen. There are so many people raising money and collecting goods, fantastic spirit from true Australians. Please ensure if you donate that it goes to a charity that is registered or if you are planning an event please register the details. The Local Land Services is one of the main lead organisations for this area. Council has an online list of resources for those looking for assistance and support - http://upperhunter.nsw.gov.au/your-council/media/news/online-resources-for-drought-affected-farmers.aspx
Murrurundi Water Progress
Council is inviting residents to an information session about Murrurundi water and progress on the Scone to Murrurundi pipeline, due to be completed in 2020. Drop by the Murrurundi Library meeting room anytime between 11.30am and 1.30pm Monday 20 August 2018 where Council staff will be available to answer questions and record your comments. If you can’t make it, submit your question/s by emailing council@upperhunter.nsw.gov.au, in person at a Council office or phoning Council on 6540 1100.
Currently Council is seeking additional water sources for Murrurundi and seeking state funding to drill emergency bores and to cart water from Scone.
Cultural Funds available
Not for Profit groups in the Upper Hunter Shire can always do with a little additional support – Council’s Cultural activity grants are now open and will close on the 31 August 2018. Each year Council awards dozens of grants to assist local non-profit organisations to promote and developing cultural and art resources and activities in the community such as performances, arts and craft supplies, sport fun days, cultural workshops, think outside the square and apply for a grant. Successful projects will be announced in late September.
