St Joseph's Aberdeen High School student Tyla Brown was recently selected for the NSW under-15s side to play at the School Sport Australia Touch Football Championships in Canberra from this Monday.
Tyla is the only student from the Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle to be selected for the week-long competition.
"I've been playing touch football since I was eight," Brown said.
"I started with Scone Touch Association, played rep for a few years and then played Muswellbrook rep for the past two or three years because there wasn't a Scone team."
The 15-year-old said her favourite aspect of the game is the speed.
"I'm pretty quick so I love how fast the game is," she said.
"I also play netball, league tag and athletics and basketball for fun.
"I've always loved the touch season, loved played everywhere, but I had never made any teams until this year."
Brown was selected for the Hunter Western Hornets Regional team this year, playing at Orange earlier in the year before making the school team.
"I hadn't made it past that level before but it was great to keep progressing this time and make the NSW side," she admitted.
"After the school team was picked we went to Maitland to play a round-robin game which is as far as I had usually got in the past. But this time I actually got selected in that team.
"The next carnival was at Nelson Bay where I was selected in the NSWCCC squad. After that I had another trial at Penrith, which was a five hour training session.
"I was selected in that side which saw me play at Narrabeen for a three-day camp before being selected in the NSW side."
Brown has already attended two training camps since the selection and will leave for Canberra this week ahead of the School Sport Australia Touch Football Championships.
She said she was pretty surprised to be selected after trying for so many years and offered some advice to other up-and-coming young players.
"Try your hardest, keep fit because it's a very fast paced game. It's a great opportunity to make new friends and meet lots of new people," she said.
"Thank you to Scone Touch and Muswellbrook Touch and the Hunter Hornets coaches who have really helped me to get to this point."
St Joseph's Aberdeen PDH/PE teacher Alison Tilse said it's been a stellar year of sports achievements for the school.
"It's been an amazing year and we are extremely proud of Tyla," she said.
"It's been a while since we had an All Schools rep - it would have been at least five years.
"We had four students represent NSW CCC at All Schools level this year including Alice Small (Swimming) Josh Fuller (Swimming) Darcy Taaffe (Cross Country) and Tyla who actually made it to the next level.
"So for us that was a big wow factor this year and for a small school we do extremely well."
