Now that all lanes on the highway are open, all diversions have been lifted.
UPDATE 6.50pm: Police are investigating a crash near Wingen on Sunday afternoon.
About 1.45pm Sunday emergency services were called to the New England Highway, about 1km north of Wingen, after reports of a crash.
Officers from Hunter Valley Local Area Command arrived to find a sedan and 4WD towing a caravan had collided head-on at the location.
The sedan driver, a 68-year-old man, was trapped in the wreckage and suffered serious injuries.
He was extricated by Fire & Rescue NSW personnel and treated by Ambulance Paramedics, before being airlifted by Westpac Helicopter to John Hunter Hospital.
The man is now undergoing emergency surgery.
A male driver and female passenger in the 4WD, both believed to be aged in their 60s, were also trapped in their vehicle.
The woman suffered broken arms and legs, while the man suffered minor injuries.
They were both released from the wreckage by Fire & Rescue NSW personnel and airlifted by Westpac Helicopter to John Hunter Hospital.
Specialist investigators from the Crash Investigation Unit have attended and are conducting an examination of the scene.
The New England Highway is expected to remain closed for a number of hours in both directions; with traffic diversions in place.
Motorists are urged to visit www.livetraffic.com for specific information on diversions as well as ongoing updates.
Current diversions are however not suitable for heavy vehicles; drivers are therefore advised to use the Pacific Highway as an alternate route.
UPDATE 4.09pm: Diversions are now available for motorists travelling on the New England Highway around 1km north of Wingen, following an accident involving two vehicles.
The accident has closed the highway in both directions.
Northbound motorists are being diverted from Scone via Liverpool Street, Satur Road, Bunnan Road, Scone Road, Golden Highway, Vinegaroy Road, Warrumbungles Way, Marrangaroo-Mullaley Road, Quirindi-Coonabarabran Road, Quirindi-Premer Road, Lennox Street and Kamilaroi Highway.
Southbound motorists are being diverted the same route reversed.
The diversions are not suitable for B-Doubles.
Heavy vehicles are advised to use the Pacific Highway instead.
Emergency services are working to free trapped occupants.

Due to the nature of the incident, the highway is expected to remain closed for some time.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area or allow plenty of additional travel time.
SUNDAY 3pm: The New England Highway has been closed in both directions after a car accident on Sunday afternoon.
The two-vehicle accident occurred at 1.52pm, about 1km north of Wingen, between Scone and Murrurundi.
There are reports an occupant or occupants of the vehicles are trapped.
Emergency services are on the scene and the highway is closed in both directions.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area.
