TransCare launched the Be Connected program on Monday which offers free online technology workshops aimed at people over 50 to help them learn everything from turning on a computer to shopping online.
TransCare community coordinator Samm Turri said the day was all about letting the community know the program would be available locally as it starts its nation-wide launch this week.
“So people can come in, sign up and progress with how to use a device, how to get online, safety, social media, all of those things associated with getting online,” she said.
“And, creating an email account which is a big thing as well.”
As a Network Partner TransCare will have access to online learning resources to offer in-person support so community members can develop their digital skills.
Starting in England, the program has come to Australia for the first time in 2018 as part of Get Online Week which runs from October 15 to 21 with the aim to support the 3 million people who are digitally excluded take the first steps to get online.
“Once we give them the tools and sign everyone onto the Be Connected program there are multiple modules and courses they can learn right from the basics of how to turn on a computer, tablet, a laptop, a smart phone,” Ms Turri said.
“Some of the courses go for 90 minutes, some of them are 30 minutes, but all are educational using the internet.”
TransCare volunteers, clients, TransCare general manager Garry Lane and Upper Hunter Shire Council mayor Wayne Bedggood attended the launch.
Following the launch TransCare will begin running regular small group sessions to local residents wanting assistance with technology starting in Scone before moving to other areas in the Upper Hunter and Muswellbrook shires.
