Transport for NSW has organised a 'Scone Bypass Community Walk' which will talk place between 9am and 12pm on Saturday, February 29.

A short ceremony will also be held from 9am to officially open the bypass with Upper Hunter MP Michael Johnsen, New England MP Barnaby Joyce and Minister for Regional Transport Paul Toole all in attendance.

The walk will be about 3.5 kilometres and will take in the three major bridges, which are key features of the bypass.

Community members will also be able to snap some photos and learn more about the project.

Mr Johnsen said the bypass was a major win for Scone with heavy vehicles set to bypass the town centre.

"Our entire region will benefit immensely from the New England Highway bypass opening and the Community Walk is the perfect way to celebrate," he said.

"Members of our local Scone community will be given a passport-style brochure as a memento and will be able to collect stamps as they cross the three bridges along the bypass route during the Community Walk."

He said it was another example of the Nationals in Government keeping their commitments and delivering for the Upper Hunter electorate.

"There is still some finishing work to be completed, but the bypass will open to vehicles by Easter," he said.

"I am very much looking forward to joining with our local community on the day to celebrate this significant milestone for our town."

Entry to the walk will be via the intersection of St Aubins Street and the new bypass.

On-street parking will be available on Aberdeen Street and Hill Street with further parking available at the rugby club.

The event will be limited to walking (no bicycles or scooters) with access for wheelchairs and prams.

Some assisted travel on buses will be available for anyone who can't complete the walk.
