Work to build a pedestrian island on the New England Highway in Scone between Kingdon Street and Smith Street starts this week.
Work will be carried out between 7am and 6pm from Monday to Friday and between 8am and 1pm on Saturday, weather permitting.
This work will improve safety by removing the need for pedestrians to cross the road while negotiating traffic moving in different directions.
New footpath and kerb ramps will also be installed to connect to the existing footpath on Surman Street and improve access to the new pedestrian refuge.
A small number of shrubs will need to be removed to allow the footpath and pedestrian refuge to be installed.
Transport for NSW has engaged Upper Hunter Shire Council to carry out the work, which is expected to be completed in three weeks.
Motorists are advised to drive to the conditions and follow the direction of signs and traffic control.
Transport for NSW thanks road users for their patience during this time.
