The Scone Polo Club Spring league held over the three days from Friday, September 25 through to Sunday, September 27 was a huge success.
Twelve teams competed for the now prestigious Dougal Archibald Cup.
The silver cup was donated by the Archibald family to honour Doug after his premature death back in 2008.
The trophy was originally awarded to the winner of a ‘Polo Pony Race’ at Gegedzerick Creek near Berridale in 1923.
Doug’s grandfather Edmund Norman Allen won the race on his mare ‘Furlette’.
The cup’s lid and polo figure on the top of the trophy was obtained by David Archibald in India and was placed on his mother and father’s wedding cake.
Sentimental it is and the tournament now is a very popular item on the polo calendar.
The winner of the Bengalla Shield was the Sledmere team of Catriona and Royston Murphy, Jock Mackay and Guy Kirkpatrick.
The winners of the Dougal Archibald Cup was the Timor team of Glen and Lachie Gilmore, Fiola Labron Johnson and Gus Aguirre.
Close to 1000 people attended the Polo Long Lunch on the Saturday to enjoy the polo and entertainment.
A total of $3200 was raised to contribute to a new training facility for the Junior Polo School and more than $1000 will go towards the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Appeal.
It was a sporting day out for family and friends and to remember a great family man and player.
