Upper Hunter Shire mayor Wayne Bedggood and council's general manager Waid Crockett participated in the Vinnie’s CEO Sleepout, run by Vinnies Australia, Upper Hunter Youth Services and Upper Hunter Homeless Support, at the Muswellbrook Showground on Thursday.
The annual sleepout attracts some 1500 CEOs to locations across Australia, along with considerably more from across the community to experience for one night, what over 100,000 people experience every night.
This event has increased the profile of homelessness throughout the country and raises much-needed funds for immediate and emergency assistance and pathways to a brighter future.
“There was only a small number that attended the event at the Muswellbrook Showground, but we had plenty to keep us occupied throughout the evening,” Mr Crockett said.
“The mayor bravely rolled out his swag next to his car and the not-so-brave GM hunkered down in the back of his car.
“I can tell you though that it was most uncomfortable and I couldn’t help wake up and think ‘I only had to do this for one night’.
“I couldn’t imagine doing this every night.
“This is a great cause.
“I will be looking to challenge my local colleagues next year and see if we can continue to support Vinnies and the terrific work they and organisations like them do.”
