The Captain’s Ride is an internationally attended six-day on road cycle tour which is the highlight of the Steve Waugh Foundation’s annual fundraising campaign.
Ausure Scone’s Jason Brooks will don the lycra, following in the footsteps of his wife Kristy Brooks who accepted the challenge last year.
The aim is to raise funds for the Steve Waugh Foundation to provide life-changing support to children and young adults affected by rare diseases.
Jason Brooks says the pair have been active in the foundation for quite a while.
“They’re the kids that no one else wants to help,” he said.
“They fall in the ‘too hard’ basket and really struggle for support”.
Jason will face a gruelling ride through high country Victoria, peddling from Melbourne, through the Snowy Mountains and back to Albury.
The Captain’s Ride is purposely made as torturous as possible for the participants, designed to reflect the daily struggle of the children the charity supports.
He has set himself a fundraising target of $25,000 ahead of the event which runs from October 29 to November 3.
“I know that my money is going directly to the kids, which is important,” he added.
And, the community support has already rolled in with the Scone Thoroughbreds Rugby League Club jumping on board to support Jason and the cause.
They are hosting a fundraising function at the Scone RSL Club to coincide with Sunday’s second State of Origin clash.
The night will feature a Calcutta and auction with the action kicking off from 5.30pm on Sunday June 24.
Scone Thoroughbreds president Tom Hagan says it’s a great opportunity for the club to give back to a worthwhile cause.
“Jason’s such a good member of the local community and supports a lot of local sporting clubs,” he said.
“So this is our way of giving back while supporting such an important cause at the same time.”
Mr Brooks said he was truly touched that the club had come on board.
“I’m very passionate about my community and I try to support where I can, so it’s a breath of fresh air when Tom came to me with the idea,” he said.
