You rarely see one improve so much from one run to the next, but new girl on the block Newcastle four-year-old Pearl Roan did just that in her last start at Scone.
Two runs back she narrowly won her maiden from the front over 1100m, but that winning feeling sparked a bigger cog in the engine.
And, she soon after produced an explosive turn of foot in a strong Class 2 win by more than two lengths.
In fact, her time of 50.86 seconds was just outside the track record set by Invincible Gangsta nearly two years ago.
But, the horse she easily beat that day, lightly-raced and talented three-year-old Rod Northam-trained filly Tango Stepz gets her chance to turn the tables fourth-up in Thursday's Class 2 Hcp over 900m on January 30.
Tango Stepz not only gets a 3kg turnaround in the weights, she should be afforded a more economical run after having to work hard from a wide draw last time.
And, let's not forget, she ran a record 51.91 seconds (last 600m in slick 33.84) around Gosford three runs ago beating the smart Invincible Kiss, with Pearl Roan back in third.
The irresistible improver meets the immovable flyer again, although rival Scone filly Talaaqy who stuck on for third in that same battle 16 days ago, and resuming Wyong mare Pluck And Lucky; will both be out to spoil the party.
Another high class sprint on the eight-race card is the BM 66 over 1100m to close the card where promising three-year-old Newcastle filly Xiaoli's Ying will strive to make it three wins from four this prep under the guidance of top hoop Aaron Bullock who himself returns to the saddle after a little New Year freshen-up.
Earlier in another 900m dash for the maidens, punters get their first look in more than nine months at smart Wyong three-year-old Henschel who resumes off a slick trial win.
